Hidden Gems: Naples & Ischia

Off the beaten tourist track – Danilo & Tamar explore Naples, the gorgeous Island of Ischia, and eat lots of pizza!

Naples

Activities

Teatro di San Carlo

The Teatro di San Carlo is the very first opera house in all of Europe.  It’s still a working opera house with symphonies, ballets, and operas, and you can also take a historical tour.

Palazzo Reale

Palazzo Reale is a beautiful old castle that you can visit and see all of the old rooms and the grand marble staircase. It’s the former home of the royal family.  It is located right in Piazza del Plebiscito which is the main square of Naples.

San Gregorio Armeno

There is a street called via San Gregorio Armeno that is famous for its handcrafted items. It is especially popular during Christmas time because they craft one of a kind statues for nativity scenes.

Restaurants

PIZZA PIZZA PIZZA!!!!!

Da Michele Pizza | Eat Pray Love movie | Naples | Italy

You cannot visit Naples and not eat pizza. I have done lots of research and my top 2 favorite spots are:

Da Salvo – Amazing!!

Da Michele – Da Michele is the best, and the restaurant featured in Eat Pray Love where Julia Roberts goes to eat pizza.

Leopoldo

For pastries and coffee, I love Leopoldo. They have an amazing assortment and are also famous for their Taralli which is a signature type of cookie in Naples.

transportation

The train and metro system is easily accessible to get to all the main attractions. I also love to just walk around and explore. Make sure to wear comfortable shoes because there are lots of cobble stones everywhere.

Day Trip: Ischia

Activities

Island of Ischia | Amalfi Coast | Italy

If you are in Naples, it is also a great idea to take a day trip to Capri. However right next to Capri, there is another much larger island called Ischia, that is just as beautiful but much less touristy.

The beach is beautiful and there are a lot of different beach clubs where you pay between 10-15 euro for a lounge chair and umbrella. It is a pretty large island, and what we did was ride a Vespa (my dream come true!) around the island to take in the sites and all the beautiful nature.

Transportation

We had a Vespa, so we got around with that or walking to nearby locations. There is quite a bit of traffic in the summertime, especially in August, because a lot of the locals escape there for their holiday. I would even recommend renting bicycles to take in all the sites.

Naples Travel tips:

Weather – Naples in August is VERY hot and humid, and unfortunately not all places have air-conditioning. Make sure to pack light clothing, but nothing too revealing or you will stand out as a tourist.

Safety – There are definitely some areas of Naples, especially around the train station, that can be a little sketchy. I do not recommend wearing flashy and expensive things and just make sure to be cautious about bags/phones/cameras. Better safe than sorry!
