Relax in the Charm of Secrets Huatulco

Daniel & Natalie’s romantic anniversary trip to Secrets Huatulco, this gorgeous adults-only, all-inclusive resort & spa!

Huatulco, Mexico

Secrets Huatulco: Activities

We loved the Secrets Huatulco Resort & Spa, located on the pacific coast of Mexico in the state of Oaxaca about seven hours south of Acapulco and four hours north of the Guatemalan border. The resort is situated on the coastline of Conejos Bay, one of nine bays in the region.

Secrets Huatulco had nightly live music entertainment as well as themed parties and movies on the beach. Kayaks, jet-ski’s, and snorkeling, among other activities, were available daily on the resort’s private beach. Compared to other all –inclusive resorts we had been to that allowed children, it was nice to be in an adults only environment with the majority of couples in their 20’s-40’s.

One of the many activities available at the resort

Cascadas de Llano Grande Excursion

On the second day of our trip we went on a tour into the lush Sierra Madre mountains to explore Cascadas de Llano Grande, a series of waterfalls and wading pools in the jungle. It was definitely a Tarzan-like experience being able to swing from trees and jump into the fresh water.  We felt refreshed to escape the intense heat index at the resort and enjoy the natural beauty of the area. It took nearly a two-hours from the resort into the mountains up narrow, bumpy, dirt roads so I would not recommend this tour for those who easily get motion sickness.  At the end of the tour we stopped at a coffee plantation for an authentic lunch and mezcal tastings.  Mezcal is a distilled liquor made from the agave plant, native to Mexico. We booked the tour through our hotel.

 Catamaran Cruise

Another tour we enjoyed was a catamaran cruise to explore the nine bays of the area. The tour left from Santa Cruz, the biggest port in the area.  It’s the same port that several cruise lines along the Mexican Riviera stop at. It was wonderful to be out on the water with local cervezas flowing. Our captain gave us history on the area including local tales of pirates and the War of Independence. We were able to enjoy time on one the bays where we stopped for lunch, beach time, and snorkeling. We booked the tour through our hotel.

Romantic Candlelit Beach Dinner

As Daniel and I were there to enjoy our first anniversary we wanted to do something special. One of our highlights on the trip was our private, candlelit dinner on the beach with white glove service. Although Secrets Huatulco itself was romantic, it was great for the two of us to escape and be able to reminisce the past year. We enjoyed a delicious 5-course dinner and champagne – definitely a meal to remember! We paid extra for the cost of our private dinner, outside of the cost of the trip.  However I would absolutely recommend this to any couple looking for a private, first class dining experience!

La Crucecita

Another plus of Secrets Huatulco was the resort’s close proximity to the lovely little town of La Crucecita. La Crucecita is a small, colorful town with a main square that offers local restaurants, markets, and bars for tequila tastings. We enjoyed an afternoon in town exploring.  Daniel was even brave enough to try the local delicacy of grasshopper tacos.

Restaurants

Secrets Huatulco included seven gourmet restaurants to suit your cravings.  These included a steak house, endless fresh seafood, French, Mexican, Italian, a more casual international buffet, as well as café options. Our favorite place to grab drinks was at the Sugar Reef Bar, an elevated outdoor lounge with gorgeous sunset views.  And of course, we also loved the pool swim up bar.

Hotel

Our room had the most gorgeous view of the sprawling ocean front pool and the Pacific Ocean.  We were surprised to see complimentary décor included by Secrets Huatulco to celebrate our first anniversary! Our favorite part of our room was the “Secrets Box”.  This was a box only accessible by the staff with a key and located on the outside of your room. The box was used for ordering room service available 24 hours a day, but with a bonus – you don’t have to see anyone! Call in your order, a ring at the door, and voila! Your meal and drinks are in the secrets box.

Huatulco Travel Tips:

Language – The beauty of La Crucecita & Huatulco is that it truly has an authentic feel much different from other tourist-driven destinations in Mexico. Rather than other places we have traveled to in Mexico, we noticed that the majority of the locals spoke little to no English.  I definitely recommend brushing up on your Spanish before heading to this area!
